Searchable Flint Death Records: 1934 to Present
The Genesee County Clerk's Vital Records Division maintains an online searchable index for Flint deaths from 1934 to the present. This is one of the better local online indexes in Michigan. You can search the index before ordering a certified copy to confirm the record exists and get basic details like the date and county of death. The online index does not replace a certified copy, but it is a useful first step.
For deaths before 1934 that are still within the county's holdings going back to 1867, in-person access through the regular office or the Friday genealogy room is the best route. Staff can search older records manually. For deaths in the 19th century especially, index coverage varies. Bring as many details as you can when requesting very old records.
Note: Online searchability from 1934 to present is managed through the county's own system. For statewide records, the MDHHS and free databases like GENDIS and Michiganology cover complementary time ranges and are worth using alongside the county system.
How to Request a Flint Death Certificate
You can get a certified Flint death certificate in person, by mail, or online through the state's VitalChek system. In-person requests at the Genesee County Clerk are typically the fastest. Bring your photo ID and know the name and approximate date of death of the person whose record you need.
For in-person visits, go to 1101 Beach Street, Flint, during regular hours (Monday to Friday, 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM). You must present a valid, government-issued photo ID. State law under MCL 333.2885 limits who can get a certified copy. Eligible requesters are immediate family members, legal representatives, and those who can show a documented legal need. The fee is $25 for the first copy and $10 for each additional copy ordered the same day. Accepted payments include cash, check, and money order.
Mail requests should include a written letter with the name of the deceased, the date and place of death, your relationship, and your reason for requesting. Enclose a legible photocopy of your photo ID and a check or money order payable to Genesee County Clerk. Mail to 1101 Beach Street, Flint, MI 48502. You can also email the division at vitalrecords@geneseecounty.org with general questions before submitting. Mail processing typically takes two to four weeks.
Online orders go through the Michigan MDHHS VitalChek portal. Pay by credit card online. VitalChek's service fee is added to the $25 county fee. Records are mailed to you. Allow time for both processing and delivery on top of the county fee.
Flint Death Record Fee Waiver Program
In July 2023, Genesee County adopted a fee waiver program for low-income residents who cannot afford the standard $25 fee for death certificates. If you qualify, the fee may be reduced or waived entirely. You will need to show documentation of your financial situation. Contact the Vital Records Division at (810) 257-3225 or email vitalrecords@geneseecounty.org to ask about the waiver process and what documentation is needed before you submit your request.
This program is local to Genesee County and does not apply to requests made through other channels like VitalChek or MDHHS. The waiver is handled directly by the county clerk's office.
Free Flint Death Index Tools
Two free statewide databases let you search Michigan death records before paying for a certified copy. Both cover older records and complement the Genesee County online index.
The GENDIS database indexes Michigan deaths from 1867 to 1897. It is a name-based search tool. Results show the county, date of death, and a file number. GENDIS is free, no login required. For Flint and Genesee County deaths in the late 1800s, this is the right place to start. The file number from GENDIS helps the clerk find your record faster.
Michiganology, run by the Library of Michigan, covers 1897 through 1952 with digitized death records from across the state. Genesee County records are included. You can often view scanned images of original documents at no cost. This is especially useful for genealogy work where you need to see the record but don't need an official certified copy. Both tools are free and open to the public.
Note: Neither GENDIS nor Michiganology is a substitute for a certified copy. For legal matters such as estate proceedings, insurance claims, or government applications, you will need the certified copy from the Genesee County Clerk.
