Green Street, Marshall, MI 49068. A second location operates at 161 E. Michigan Ave., Battle Creek, MI 49014. Calhoun County's records go back to 1867, consistent with the start of Michigan statewide registration. Land deeds and marriage records here date to 1833, which reflects the longer history of the county seat. The death index from 1867 is largely complete and covers all registered deaths across the county's townships and cities.
MDHHS maintains state copies of all Calhoun County death records filed from 1867 onward and provides an alternative ordering channel to the Marshall clerk's office.

How to Get Calhoun County Death Records
In person is the most direct method. Visit the Marshall office at 315 W. Green Street during office hours. Bring a valid photo ID and payment. The first certified copy costs $20.00 and each additional copy of the same record is $10.00. If you need a copy only for genealogy research rather than legal use, ask for a genealogy copy at $5.00. Genealogy copies do not carry the legal seal but are useful for personal research at a much lower cost.
For mail requests, send a completed request form, a photocopy of your driver's license, and a check or money order to the Marshall office. The driver's license copy requirement is firm for mail requests. Do not skip it or your request will be delayed. Address the payment to the Calhoun County Clerk and mail to 315 W. Green Street, Marshall, MI 49068. Under MCL 333.2885, Michigan death records are public, so you do not need to prove a family relationship.
The online portal is available through the county's website but only works in Chrome or Edge browsers. Firefox and Safari are not supported. If you try to access it in an unsupported browser, the portal may not load correctly. Use Chrome or Edge to avoid issues.
Note: CPL (Concealed Pistol License) applications must go through the Marshall office only; this does not affect death record requests but is worth knowing if you have multiple transactions.
Free Calhoun County Death Index Search
Before contacting the clerk, try two free statewide tools that cover Calhoun County deaths. The GENDIS database covers Michigan deaths from 1867 through 1897. It is searchable by name and free to use. This covers the first 30 years of Calhoun County death registration and is a good place to start for 19th-century research.
Michiganology.org picks up the index from 1897 through 1952. Together, these two sites give you free access to Calhoun County death index records spanning 85 years. Neither provides certified copies, but both give you the name, date, and registration details you need to identify the right record before ordering. For deaths from 1953 to present, contact the clerk directly at (269) 781-0718 or use the county's online portal.
FamilySearch.org also carries Calhoun County records, particularly from the 19th century. It is free and often has records cross-referenced against church and cemetery sources that complement the state death index.
What Calhoun County Death Records Include
A certified death certificate from Calhoun County includes the full name of the person who died, the date and place of death, age at death, and the cause of death as certified by the attending physician or medical examiner. The record also lists the informant's name, and the place of burial or cremation. The raised seal from the county clerk makes the certificate valid for probate filings, life insurance claims, pension applications, and legal name change requests.
A genealogy copy contains the same information but without the legal seal. At $5.00, it is a much cheaper option when you only need the information for family history research and will not be submitting the document to a court or agency. For pre-1867 deaths, state registration did not exist. Probate records from Calhoun County's earlier years, as well as church registers and burial records, are the main sources for that period. Calhoun County's land deed records going back to 1833 may also reference deaths in early property transfer documents.
The Michigan MDHHS holds state copies of all Calhoun County death records from 1867. You can order certified copies through MDHHS at michigan.gov/mdhhs. State fees are $34 for the first copy and $16 for each additional copy, which is more expensive than ordering directly from the county.
Michigan Death Index Resources for Calhoun County
Michigan death registration requirements, now codified under MCL 333.2843, have been in place since 1867. This is why the Calhoun County death index is largely intact from that year forward. Registration compliance improved steadily through the late 1800s and was very consistent by the early 1900s. MDHHS at 333 S. Grand Avenue in Lansing holds state-level duplicates and can be reached at (517) 335-8656.
For researchers working on large family trees that cross multiple Michigan counties, MDHHS is more efficient than contacting each county separately. For Calhoun County specifically, the county clerk's Marshall office is the right first stop, especially if you want the genealogy copy option at $5.00, which is not available through the state.
