State Vital Records Office in Lansing
Because Lansing is the state capital, the Michigan MDHHS State Vital Records Office is also in Ingham County. The state office at michigan.gov/mdhhs/doing-business/vitalrecords holds death records from all 83 Michigan counties going back to 1867. You can order from the state directly. State fees are set separately from Ingham County's local fees, so check both to compare costs.
Having both the county and the state office in the same area is helpful. If you need records from multiple Michigan counties, the state vital records route may be more efficient than contacting each county individually. The state processes orders from across Michigan and has the same underlying data as the local clerk.
The GENDIS online death index at vitalstats.michigan.gov covers Michigan deaths from 1867 through a recent cutoff. Search by name and year to find a registration number before ordering the full certificate. This is especially useful for common surnames where you need to confirm which record belongs to your family member before paying for a copy.
Note: For the most recent deaths, GENDIS may not yet reflect new registrations. Contact the Ingham County Clerk directly for recent records.

Ingham County is large by Michigan standards, with Lansing as its main urban center. Death records from the 1867-1900 period are available but may have gaps in rural township registrations. Urban records from Lansing are generally more complete. Cause of death on older records often reflects 19th-century medical terminology, which genealogists sometimes need to translate. Terms like "consumption" mean tuberculosis and "dropsy" means fluid buildup, typically from heart or kidney disease.
For older records and digitized collections, check Michiganology.org and FamilySearch.org. Both have Michigan death record collections that include Ingham County entries at no charge.
