Lenawee County Death Records Research

The free Michigan GENDIS index is a good tool for researching Lenawee County deaths without cost. GENDIS lets you search by name to find the year and county of death. It doesn't produce a certified certificate, but it confirms a record exists and where to go for the full document. This is especially helpful when you don't know the exact year a person died.

Michiganology holds digitized records for many Michigan counties, including some Lenawee County material. The site is maintained by the Library of Michigan and is free to use. FamilySearch also has Michigan death collections that go back well into the 1800s. For Lenawee County genealogy research, combining GENDIS, Michiganology, and FamilySearch gives you a fairly complete set of tools before you pay for a certified copy.

Under MCL 333.2843, Michigan vital records are subject to state access rules. Death records generally become more accessible over time. The GENDIS index does not carry the same restrictions as certified copies, so it is open to all users regardless of their relationship to the deceased.
