Wayne County Clerk Handles Livonia Death Records

All death records for Livonia are held at the Wayne County Clerk's Office. The clerk is located at 400 Monroe Street, 4th Floor, in downtown Detroit. This is the only office that can issue a certified copy of a Livonia death certificate. In-person visits are by appointment only. The office does not accept walk-ins for death record requests. Book your appointment through the county's scheduling system or by calling (313) 224-5522.

At your appointment, you will need to present a valid, government-issued photo ID. You should also know the full name of the deceased and the approximate date of death. The more specific you can be about the date, the easier it is for staff to locate the record. Payment is accepted in cash, check, or money order at the office. The first certified copy is $24 and additional copies of the same record ordered at the same visit cost $12 each.

Michigan MDHHS vital records for Livonia Death Index

MDHHS manages statewide vital records policy and ordering in Michigan, covering all Wayne County cities including Livonia.

There are three ways to request a certified copy of a Livonia death record: in person by appointment, by mail, or online through VitalChek. Your choice depends on how fast you need the record and whether you can travel to Detroit.

In-person appointments at the Wayne County Clerk are the fastest route. You book ahead, show up at 400 Monroe Street with your photo ID, and the clerk typically processes your request the same day. Have the name of the deceased, the date of death, and your relationship ready. Payment options at the office are cash, check, or money order. If you are handling a recent death for estate purposes, in-person is often the best choice to move quickly.

Mail requests take longer but do not require a trip downtown. Write a letter with the full name of the deceased, the date and place of death, your relationship to the person, and the purpose of your request. Attach a legible photocopy of your government ID. Send a check or money order for $24 (plus $12 for each additional copy) made payable to Wayne County Clerk. Mail to 400 Monroe Street, 4th Floor, Detroit, MI 48226. Expect two to four weeks for processing and return.

Online ordering is available through the Michigan MDHHS VitalChek portal. Pay by credit card. Records ship to your home address. VitalChek's service fee is added to the $24 county fee. Total cost online will exceed the in-person price.

Note: Michigan law under MCL 333.2885 limits who can get certified death records. You must be an immediate family member, legal representative, or have a clear documented legal need. The clerk may ask for proof of your eligibility.

Livonia Death Certificate Fees

Wayne County charges $24 for the first certified copy and $12 for each additional copy requested at the same time. These prices apply to all request methods. Online orders cost more because of the VitalChek service fee. Never send cash in the mail. Checks or money orders payable to Wayne County Clerk are the only accepted mail payment form.

Many people find they need multiple certified copies when handling an estate, insurance claim, or other legal matter. Financial institutions, courts, and employers often each want their own original certified copy. It makes sense to request several at once rather than paying twice or going back to the clerk a second time.

Two free Michigan databases let you search the death index without paying for a certified copy. Both are good starting points before you file a formal request.

The GENDIS database covers deaths from 1867 to 1897. You can search by name and see basic death information along with a file number. GENDIS is free, no account needed. For older Livonia-area deaths in the late 19th century, GENDIS is the right tool. The file number it returns helps the clerk locate your record faster when you order.

Michiganology, maintained by the Library of Michigan, has digitized records from 1897 through 1952. Wayne County death records are well represented in this database. You may find scanned images of the original records, which is often enough for research or genealogy purposes without ordering a certified copy. Both tools are free and open to anyone with internet access.
